Holium is the most expensive rare earth element because of a particular property known as its magnetic moment which is useful for making magnets stronger. You can find it in MRI machines, and in solid state lasers.

Impurities added to fibre optics can be used to store light energy and release it in the form of a laser pulse. Holmium is also used in nuclear reactors because it can absorb neutrons. Neutrons are released when you split an atom (releasing nuclear energy) and so it’s important to mop them up to save this process getting out of control.

It was discovered in 1878 by two different groups of scientists: Per Teodor Cleve at Uppsala, Sweden and Marc Delafontaine and Louis Soret in Geneva, Switzerland.

The name comes from the Latin word for Stockholm, “Holmia” and the element has a bright silvery metallic appearance. It is non-toxic and has no biological role but can be found in some minerals.

Gli alcoli sono composti organici caratterizzati dal gruppo funzionale –OH e i tioli, noti anche come mercaptani sono analoghi agli alcoli presentando il gruppo funzionale –SH.

Sia gli alcoli che i tioli sono acidi deboli e dato che lo zolfo è meno elettronegativo rispetto all’ossigeno e quindi il legame S-H è meno polare del legame O-H ci si potrebbe aspettare che i tioli siano meno acidi degli alcoli. Tuttavia poiché lo zolfo ha dimensioni maggiori dell’ossigeno si lega meno fortemente all’atomo di idrogeno che ha piccole dimensioni.

Boy Hormones Make Plants Pink!

You might have heard already about endocrine disrupting chemicals, also known as EDCs. They're produced in a range of man-made things, from plastics to personal care products.
The most common one we've heard of is BPA, which is found in plastics- or at least used to be found in plastics. These days, most plastics used for food and drinks contains a little 'BPA FREE' sign, to alleviate public concern.

The concern comes from the fact that, structurally, EDCs look a lot like hormones that are naturally produced in human bodies- think estrogen, testosterone, and a whole lot of others. .
Because of their similarity, it's been suggested that EDCs can interrupt normal hormonal changes in humans- which could lead to nasty stuff like cancer and developmental defects. We want to note that the research is still young in this field, and we're not aware of any conclusive studies in humans (but it's not our speciality- so be sure to hit us up if you know of something concrete). Nonetheless, there's a lot of concern about EDCs, and their ability to get into, and then build up in waterways and soils.

So today on the blog, we're talking about a plant that could be used to detect whether certain land is accumulating EDCs. 
The plant turns pink (well, pinky red) when when it comes into contact with EDCs that look like male hormone group known as 'androgens' (testosterone is an example). And for those of you who are keeping score and are really against that whole 'pink is for girls and blue for boys', we feel that we should mention that ANOTHER research group make a plant that gets all kinds of BLUE when it comes into contract with estrogen!

Mische 10 g Hefe in einem Glas mit 30 ml Wasser. Kombiniere etwas Lebensmittelfarbe und 100ml 3%ige Wasserstoffperoxidlösung in einem zweiten Glas. Schütte die Hefemischung schnell in das bunte Wasserstoffperoxid. Beobachte die Bildung einer großen Schaummenge. * Du kannst experimentieren und 10 ml Flüssigseife in die Ausgangslösung geben. Dadurch wird der Schaum dicker und flockiger!
In Gegenwart von Wasserstoffperoxid scheidet die Hefe ein Enzym namens Katalase äußerst aktiv aus. Dieses Enzym beschleunigt die Zersetzung von Wasserstoffperoxid in Wasser und Sauerstoff, wodurch die Mischung schäumt.
