An important word from Dr. Jim Sanderson, our founder and director as well as a member of the IUCN Cat Specialist Group, a review board member of the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, and a Fellow of the Wildlife Conservation Network. "Umbrella species .
It’s often claimed and easily accepted that big cats serve as an umbrella species for all creatures living around them. Protect tigers & all other species will be protected. Sounds too good to be true & it turns out it is too good to be true. Here’s why & you can reason through it yourself. Big cat prey on whatever they want. Jaguars eat everything from birds & turtles to large bulls. Tigers too are not picky. What is the habitat of a puma?  Canada to Patagonia. They can live wherever there is food of any kind. .
Small creatures are not such generalist predators. Being small means being choosy. Small cats are habit & prey specialists. The flat-headed cat, smaller than a house cat, preys in small fish, crustaceans & frogs living near wetlands.
.
So think about this. If the wetland is drained & replaced by oil palm trees, the flat-headed cat vanished. The tiger doesn’t care because the tiger preys on the wild pigs that invade. .
What’s tragic is that tigers, not flat-headed cats, are monitored. Everything looks great. More pigs, more tigers. The extirpation of the tiny flat-headed cat goes unnoticed.
.
What’s the lesson?  Generalist predators like big cats rarely serve as umbrellas for specialist species. The tragic impact is that the umbrella belief prevents us from even looking." .

Co-founder @tannerunderwater & @x__e__l__a are teaming up to help sharks. This photograph of the bullshark will be available as a white gloss aluminum print (16x24) included with this hand crafted, sustainably sourced black diamond pave Mako shark tooth necklace crafted by @x__e__l__a in an auction where 100% of the proceeds will be sent to @sealegacy in effort to raise awareness for the plight of sharks and the future of our planet.
I love bullsharks because of the power they possess.. and my favorite thing in the world trying is to capture that power through photo. My whole life I have been told that bullsharks are aggressive towards humans, unpredictable, and we should leave the water immediately if we see one. In reality, the best dives of my life have been with bullsharks. They are cautious and although powerful, completely uninterested in humans. They are actually quite scared of us. There is so much more going on in the brains of these complex creatures. They are so inquisitive, and they are not credited enough on how smart they really are. Millions of years of evolution has perfected these extraordinary apex predators and for the first time in 400 million years, after surviving 4 global mass extinctions, they are vulnerable to extinction. This is not a natural cause, this is a man made issue and it is up to us to fix it. The bidding will take place on Friday 8/23 at 8am and end at midnight.

The bidding will begin at $800. If you do not wish to bid, we hope you will share this to help make a difference. #bid #sharkconservation #savesharks #shark #conservation #helpsavesharks #aluminumprint #necklace #tooth #sharktooth #sharktoothnecklace #sealegacy #donation #a7r3 #sonyalpha

It's the last day of my IG takeover for @thirdmillenniumalliance! If you find this forest scene as beautiful as I do, then please do the world a favor and go support these conservation heros! Maybe even consider joining their cause to buy up the last remaining parcels of this forest (link in their bio). Buy an acre and offset your carbon emissions by dozens of metric tons! You can't spend money better than that

Your bird of the day is the Bohemian waxwing! These songbirds don’t have territories, and fly around in flocks looking for fruiting trees to pillage. They’ll eat everything off your trees or berry bushes in a few minutes and be on to the next one. Waxwings are only in Alaska for breeding season and will soon be flying for thousands on miles to their winter grounds in central Canada and the Rockies.
We see them in flocks of up to 30 with lots of juveniles this time of year. A cute flash of color in the woods!

Oh wow, look! A jellyfish!
Wait, no that's just somebody's random plastic 🤮 This could be your trash. It could be mine. It could be someone's from anywhere in the world. If you use plastic at all, you're part of the problem that contributes to our oceans being full of plastic. And that's not a self-sanctifying statement of me trying to look down on other people. I'm not plastic-free. I try to be as responsible as I can with my trash, but I certainly contribute to the global problem of litter. .....
Plastic poses a lot of the problems in the environment. First, production of the vast majority of plastics uses petroleum and other fossil fuels, worsening our ongoing climate change problems. Next, there are a lot of toxic chemicals within plastics that can leech into the water or surrounding environment. Thirdly, it does not biodegrade for at least several hundred years; in fact, instead of decomposing, it actually breaks up into smaller pieces called microplastics (>5 mm.), which are readily eaten by sealife. Animals accidentally ingest them on all levels of the food web, from tiny filter feeders to large fish to whales. .....
Recent studies have produced some pretty shocking findings about plastics. A study out of Colorado published last week that rainwater samples were contaminated by microscopic plastic threads, contributing to growing evidence that plastics are not just polluting the waterways, but also the precipitation and the air that we breathe. A Canadian study this summer found that the average American eats a credit card worth of plastic EVERY SINGLE WEEK. That's disgusting. Scientists have also estimated that at current rate, there could be more plastics in the ocean than fish by 2050. Plastic is all around us and is extremely difficult to completely avoid, but I'll talk in my post tomorrow about some things that can be done to help reduce your plastic impact.

#repost THANK YOU to everyone who has bought my new book “What you should know about sharks” and THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH spreading the word. I’ve been so busy out on the water, in meetings, or gearing up for the upcoming presentations and projects in Australia and Taiwan (more info soon.) Thank you for the photo @camgrantphotography from the other day cutting fishing line off a small tiger shark that swam through. Fishing line on sharks, turtles, reefs, and other marine life is unfortunately more and more common but every little effort can help and I am thrilled that there are more people than ever willing to help offset the destructive impacts of humans. Join @oneoceanconservation the 2nd Saturday of each month to help with Reef and beach clean ups or check out @sustainablecoastlineshawaii @surfrideroahu @808cleanups and others or just help clean up the beach and water ways every time you go and reduce your impact by reducing, recycling, and reusing and not supporting commercial large scale fisheries. This is the biggest #magnolia tree I’ve ever seen. It was more than 40 feet tall and wider than I could hug on my own. Finding magnolia trees as large as this one is rare in Florida because most were cut down and turned into crates for shipping citrus in the early 20th century 🍊. This one will be protected in perpetuity and that makes me really happy. 🧡 #nature #conservation #savethebigtrees #legacytree #oldgrowth #oldgrowthtree

Credit to from @belinda_vegan (@get_regrann) - The hashtag #PrayForAmazonia went viral on Tuesday as social media users attempted to draw the world's attention to the Amazon rainforest, which has been devastated for weeks by fires so intense they can be seen from space.

According to Euro News, it is unclear whether the fires were caused by agricultural activity or deforestation. Both have accelerated rapidly under Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who made opening the Amazon to corporate exploitation a key plank of his election campaign.

Twitter users on Tuesday slammed the media for paying too little attention to the Amazon blazes, particularly given the essential role the rainforest plays in absorbing planet-warming carbon dioxide—a capacity that earned it the nickname "lungs of the world." "The Amazon has been burning for three weeks, and I'm just now finding out because of the lack of media coverage," wrote one observer. "This is one of the most important ecosystems on Earth."Satellite data collected by the Brazilian government's National Space Research Institute (INPE) published in June showed that deforestation has risen dramatically under Bolsonaro, who dismissed the research as "a lie" and fired INPE director Ricardo Galvão for defending the data.

As The Guardian reported, the INPE findings showed the Amazon "lost 739sq km during the 31 days [of May], equivalent to two football pitches every minute."

Why are things like this not being talked about?! The Brazilian rainforest is burning at a record rate along with other forests around the world! The most alarming is the Amazon rainforest! The Amazon is the largest tropical rainforest in the world and is so detrimental in limiting global warming. This deforestation is hurting the environment at an even more rapid pace than before. This is what happens when you choose development over conservation. These trees are literally keeping the carbon on the ground and preventing it from going into the atmosphere. Why do we keep destroying the very things that keep our planet thriving. As a whole we all need a major shift in mindset and do something. Also praying for the people of São Paulo 🙏🏼 #PrayforAmazonia #Brazil #conservation

This map is an old, 1856 map of Florida. The map was made by the surveyor-general, and it is probably one of the most detailed and accurate depictions of the “original” Florida. A large section of it shows the natural configuration of South Florida’s water system, where the water once flowed freely from the Kissimmee River Basin, into Lake Okeechobee, southward through the Everglades, then exiting into Florida Bay and the Gulf. By comparing the 1856 situation to today, it’s easy to see why Florida’s water is in such a mess. A once-integrated, natural water flow has now been dammed, diverted, and piecemealed by a series of man-made “improvements,” and it barely resembles the cohesive system it once was. With all the “progress,” nothing works like it should, and the dysfunctional result has evolved into a steady supply of dirty water that is creating misery for people, businesses, and wildlife from coast to coast. It’s clear that Florida has some choices to make. Is it acceptable to continue to divert polluted water far and wide and just learn to live with it? Or should we look to what Florida once was and work to restore it to what made it so special in the first place? #florida #southflorida #everglades #water #natural #river #lake #okeechobee #caloosahatchee #restoration #history #floridahistory #map #pollution #conservation #19thcentury #1800s #fixfloridawater #makeachange #floridaismylife #floridatough #cleanourwater #begoodtommothernature #cleanwaterinitiative #saveflorida #savefloridawaters #native #floridanative

Good morning visits from some friendly locals! We love getting into nature and experiencing the beauty of our wildlife. It’s a passion that is anchored deep within us after spending many years working alongside many of this country’s most remarkable conservation and wildlife experts.
Having the opportunity to now transfer this passion and teach our little man to respect and appreciate nature and the environment, is one of our greatest responsibilities. 🌿🌏

Whale Shark in the Sharkiest Place on Earth
✦
“The moment that you jump in the water at Darwin and Wolf Island,” says photographer Lucas Bustamante, “you feel that you are immersed in a marine documentary by yourself.”
✦
“Everywhere around you is full of giant schools of fishes, sea lions, marine iguanas, and a lot of sharks,” he describes. “It's a perfect reminder for us what a healthy and protected ocean looks like.”
✦
“This was my first time doing underwater photography,” explains Bustamante, “and what better than to start in one of the most important global marine sanctuaries, with the advice, tips, and inspiration from the great @cristinamittermeier and @paulnicklen.”
✦
“Here lives the king of Darwin and Wolf Island,” notes Bustamante, “a massive Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus), the largest non-cetacean animal in the world! We swam with around 10 of them during our days there, from very big adults to a tiny nine foot baby. Normally there were other sharks with them as well, like here a Galapagos Shark (Carcharhinus galapagensis). A normal day in the sharkiest place on Earth!”

This past Saturday marked the second coral restoration expedition of our summer collaboration with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL). With the help of their amazing team, we were able to outplant another 100+ corals to their new reef restoration site! While the new site name is still being developed (stay tuned!), this reef will be an expansion of the one that they built from the ground up last year. As the reef develops, it will serve as both a natural barrier protecting coastal communities and a home to many different marine species. We can’t wait to watch it grow! A big thank you to the RCL conservation team and citizen scientists for your hard work and stewardship to our oceans.

SYNURBIC CHIROPTERA
Mixed media (used video tape, metal scraps)
Anna Shapiro
“Synurbic Chiroptera” was made to raise awareness about bats, the only flying mammal, as they exist in areas of urbanization.
🐾
The work is titled synurbic- meaning more frequent, or abundant, in urban areas than in other habitats, and Chiroptera- the taxonomic order of bats. As of 2011 there were 1232 documented species of bats. Many key words are selected from the article “Sensitivity of Bats to Urbanization: an overview” (Rossi & Ancilotto, 2014) are included in the sculpture. These small and sensitive species play a huge role in understanding ecological change. Hovering and creepy, excellent insect pest control, some bat species will thrive in urban areas, some will perish. Ultimately it is crucial to study and understand the variety of bat species within the visible and invisible realms of increased urbanization. What affects these delicate mammals will also affect us.
🐾
The onomatopoetic sounds of this title is a playful way for me to mix nature, science and art. The crocheted material in this piece is crisp, cool videotape. The armatures on which the textile is stretched and hung are scraps found on walks in the urban landscape. The method of knotting is feminine and familiar. The metal is rusty, but strong; likely something obsolete or tossed away as useless even. These “insignificant” items are to be made precious by making them thoughtfully made and beautiful.

Anyone want a really awesome overland rig? You might have the opportunity. .
.
We bought this setup based on the promise of some folks who had guarenteed our continued employment in the overland field that ended up backing out on their word and left us hanging. We figured we could make it work but the more we use it the more we are just not adapting to it. .
.
We have always said that the key to freedom and travel is a decent income or no debt. At the moment we have neither. .
.
To make matters worse, given we have limited income, the idea of being this much in debt makes us REALLY picky to quality. Just today our SECOND @overlandsolar 160w panel started acting up. We are monitoring at the moment, but if it continues we will be seeking a warranty replacement. There have been other quality issues as well that have been addressed but to us these things should not happen to a 45,000 dollar camper. .
.
While the rig is solid and will go anywhere and runs like a top, The overhead debt is really wearing on us and we are seriously concidering selling. .
.
We are looking at $60k The rig is 6mo old. The truck is a unicorn 05 Tundra Limited V8 with only 45k miles and no rust with a wax coated frame and fresh timing belt. A Mainline Overland built rig done right. If you want just the Fleet flatbed camper, $32K. .
PM if you want to discuss.
